BABA BUDHA JI
THE BOY WHO SPOKE LIKE A SAGE
As a young boy, Bura met Guru Nanak Dev Ji and asked him about life and death. His words were so wise that the Guru gave him a new name: Budha, the old one.
He went on to serve the first six Gurus. He anointed five of them, became the first Granthi of Harmandir Sahib, and taught the young Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.
Through more than a hundred years of service he never sought position or praise. He served, and our Gurdwara is proud to carry his name.

Humility & seva
He gave his whole life to serving others. Every meal, prayer and open door here is made possible by sewadaars giving their time freely.
Devotion to Gurbani
He was the first to read from Guru Granth Sahib Ji at Harmandir Sahib. Gurbani fills our darbar morning and evening, every day.
Wisdom & learning
He was a teacher of Gurus. Through our library, sangat and programmes we help every generation understand the Gurus' teachings.
Faith in action
He tied on the swords of Miri and Piri. We stand for truth, justice and the protection of others, in prayer and in our community.
Langar for all
In the Gurus' house no one is turned away. Our langar is open to everyone, whatever their faith or background.

The two swords
In 1606 Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji became the sixth Guru. At his gurgaddi Baba Budha Ji tied on two swords: Miri, for worldly duty and justice, and Piri, for spiritual devotion.
The message was clear: faith and duty go together. That is why our home is called Miri Piri House, a place to grow spiritually and to serve the community around us.

- Weekends: a later start — we’ll confirm the time with you
